You begin on the Plaza de la Catedral in Cadiz, at the edge of the old town, and the first clue takes you through the Pasaje Arco de la Rosa into the streets behind it. From there the route works towards Plaza Topete and the Plaza de San Juan de Dios. It is an outdoor escape game set in a town that sits almost entirely on a peninsula, so the sea is rarely more than a few streets away.
A team of two to five plays from one phone, with each member taking a character who holds part of the mission, so the group has to compare what it knows before anything moves forward. Families, friends, couples and colleagues all get on with it. Cadiz is flat and the old town is dense, which means short distances between clues and plenty of corners to get briefly lost on. Groups above five split into more teams. There is no guide, and you decide yourself when to begin.
Four steps stand between arriving in Cadiz and the first puzzle.
Magnus has the stolen formulas, and everything you do is aimed at getting them back. Teams work through codes, riddles and photo tasks, dividing them by character as they go. The chase passes the Torre Tavira and later the Museo de Cádiz, in the blocks between the market and the water.
Two or three teams playing at once makes it a straight race, which is why groups book it for team building. Nothing is on a clock, so a break by the water costs you nothing, and the last clue leaves you back among the old streets of Cadiz.
A busy square in the old town known to locals as the Plaza de las Flores after its flower stalls. It stands beside the central market.
The open square in front of Cádiz cathedral, whose long building history left it baroque below and neoclassical above, crowned by a yellow-tiled dome.
A narrow passage beside the cathedral named after the Arco de la Rosa, one of the surviving gateways of the medieval walled town.
The square between the old town and the harbour, overlooked by the city hall and long the commercial heart of Cádiz.
A straight street of tall houses and small taverns running through the old quarter of El Pópulo and Santa María.
A short street in the old town, a few steps from the shops of Calle San Francisco.
A small square in the old town beside the former Augustinian convent and its church of San Agustín.
A street named after the Hospital de Mujeres, a baroque charitable hospital of the 18th century whose chapel opens onto it.
A large theatre in red brick built in neo-Mudéjar style around the turn of the 20th century, its front pierced by three horseshoe arches. It hosts the main singing contests of the Cádiz carnival.
The tallest of the old watchtowers of Cádiz, raised in the 18th century above a merchant's house to watch for ships. It now holds a camera obscura.
The provincial museum of Cádiz, holding Phoenician and Roman finds from the city together with a collection of Spanish painting.
A large open square near the harbour, dominated by the tall monument commemorating the Spanish constitution of 1812.
A twin-towered church giving its name to Plaza San Antonio, one of the most elegant squares of the old town.
