Salamanca puts its Plaza Mayor at the centre of everything, and that is where the trail opens. From the arcades the route drops down past the Casa de las Conchas, over to the Iglesia de San Benito and out to the Plaza de Anaya. It is a self-guided walking tour built around a murder, with the sandstone streets of the old town as the scene.

Nearly all of old Salamanca sits within a few hundred metres, so the walk is manageable for families with children, groups of friends, couples and colleagues, and one player on their own has no trouble with it. A team is up to four people sharing a phone, while bigger parties break into several teams and set off separately. No guide comes along and no start time is set, so an early morning round or a late afternoon one both work.

How to play

Setting up takes a few minutes and happens on the phone you already carry.

  1. Book the City Game
  2. Check the instructions email
  3. Download the Loquiz app
  4. Start playing whenever you like

The case is the murder of Balthasar. You work through coded messages, photo assignments and the accounts of digital characters who each remember the night differently. Around the Plaza de la Merced and the university quarter the contradictions become clear, and every puzzle solved narrows the list of names.

When several teams are playing it turns into a contest, which is what makes it a usable teambuilding exercise as well as a day out. Pause for a meal, take it up again afterwards, and let the last answer fall into place in Salamanca.
