The route begins at the Portal de ses Taules, the ramp and gateway leading up into the walled old town of Ibiza. From there the game sends you down into the narrow streets below the walls, past Sant Salvador de la Marina, and back along the harbour side. Walking is how you play: this is a city escape game, not a route with a guide at the front.
A team is two to five people on one phone, and every player is given a character with a role in the mission, which keeps the whole group involved rather than one person reading aloud. The old quarter of Ibiza climbs in places and the lanes are cobbled, so decent shoes matter more here than in a flat town. Families, groups of friends, couples and colleagues all play it. Larger parties break into more than one team, and with no guide and no set departure, each team leaves when it is ready.
Getting started in Ibiza takes four steps and nothing else.
The story turns on Magnus, who has the stolen formulas and no intention of handing them over. Following him means codes, riddles and photo tasks, with the character each player took on deciding who can solve what. The search reaches the Baluard de Sant Pere, where the bastion looks out over the water and the next clue waits.
With several teams playing at the same time it becomes a race, which is why groups use it for team building as much as for a day out. Stop when you want, sit somewhere in the shade, then carry on where you left off in Ibiza.
A short street at the foot of the walls of Dalt Vila, a few paces from the Portal de ses Taules, the main gateway into the old town. The old market hall stands just along the way.
A small whitewashed church in the harbour quarter of La Marina, long associated with the seafarers of Ibiza. Its plain front and simple bell gable are typical of Ibizan religious building.
A street in the flat lower town between the port and the walls of Dalt Vila. It is lined with tall shuttered townhouses whose ground floors hold shops and bars.
A broad promenade running along the edge of the old harbour district. It forms part of the open ground laid out where the town spread beyond its walls.
A street named after James I of Aragon, whose conquests brought the Balearic Islands into the Crown of Aragon in the thirteenth century. It runs below the western walls of the old town.
One of the bastions of the Renaissance walls that enclose Dalt Vila, begun in the sixteenth century to defend the town against raiders. The rampart walk gives wide views over the town and the sea.
A steep, quiet lane in the upper part of Dalt Vila, close to the cathedral and the old noble houses. Its name recalls the conquest of the island in 1235.
A lane in the eastern part of Dalt Vila, running inside the line of the walls. Nearby is the Portal Fosc, a dark vaulted passage through the fortifications.
The far end of Carrer del General Balanzat, high on the eastern flank of Dalt Vila. Whitewashed houses here look out over the sea and the harbour entrance.
The main street of Dalt Vila just inside the Portal de ses Taules, narrow and paved with stone. Its old houses now hold galleries, craft shops and restaurants with terraces.
A street in the lower town named after the Carthaginian general Hannibal, reflecting the long Punic history of Ibiza. It runs between the port area and the foot of the old town walls.
